Ardisia japonica

Japanese Malberry

A suckering perennial shrub from Japan with large leathery leaves. The 2" wide leaves are 3" long with a notched edge all the way around.  Grows about 12" tall with showy red berries, can reseed in ideal situations. Best in part shade with moist soil high in organic matter. Here in Hawaii it's called Hilo Holly for the red berries, but I have grown this plant well in California as well. An easy plant to grow, very adaptable, makes a good house plant too.
