 Variegated Japanese Ardisia

A suckering perennial from Japan with a great white variegation. Only grows about 8" tall with a very slow habit. Best in part shade with moist soil high in organic matter. One of the best variegated forms. I got this plant many years ago and the nursery no longer sells it, which is a shame because it's such a good plant. I had this in my San Diego garden for years and it did very well, but it was slow. Here in Hawaii it likes it even better, growing much faster, probably because of the good quality and amount water available. It's very cold hardy, and should do well everywhere from zones 7 - 10. It took the salts of Southern California without difficulty, as long as it got regular water. The species gets taller, and has showy red berries, this selection has never berried for me, but maybe it will with time here. The new growth is nicely bronzed and provides a really nice contrast.
