Clerodendrum minahassae

Tropical Harlequin Glory Bush

A tropical shrub about 6' tall with an upright habit. Large green leaves are bronze as they newly emerge in the spring, showy white flowers bloom at the same time with persistent bronzy-red calyxes for a great color combination. Followed by showy blue berries. It can tolerate a light frost, prefers a lot of warmth and humidity in the summer. Indonesia, Philippines. I didn't know this plant before I moved to Hawaii, but I really like it and so does everyone else who sees it. Coastal CA might be too cool, but inland CA and across the southern US I think would do well. I'd bet it would be good used as an annual on the east coast with all that heat and humidity in the summer. We had this mislabeled as Clerodendrum trichotomum for a time, which has a very similar flower, but fuzzy leaves and more cold hardiness.
