Black Stem Hydrangea

This is a great spin on the more common garden Hydrangea. This variety has black stems and large rounded flower clusters. As a cut flower they look amazing in a glass vase. They are semi-evergreen shrubs or sometimes fully deciduous shrubs, particularly in a colder climate. Hydrangeas can be susceptible to mildew, but it is rarely a serious problem. This selection has rounded pink or blue flowers. Flower color on Hydrangeas is dependent on soil ph,  alkaline soils (high pH above 7.5) cause pink coloration, typical in the southwest. While acid soils (low pH below 6.5), cause the flowers to turn blue. They prefer a rich organic soil, with regular moisture. Mulching is very beneficial.
