 Morus nigra

Persian Fruiting Mulberry

A deciduous tree with sweet black berries in the summer. The fruit is dark with a slightly tart flavor. The fruit can be variable in quality, these are seed grown, but grafted selections are sold. Seedling trees usually have smaller fruit than the named varieties, sweetness will vary. They are said to hardy to 10 F. Because they are grown on their own roots, even in a vey cold winter they can re-sprout from the root. Flowers and fruit are produced on new growth. The large leaves are bold in the summer, the compact structure is showy in the winter. Can grow to 12’ or more. Birds love the tree, I like to prune it up to make it easier to pick fruit, and possibly net to keep birds out, or don't and share with nature, there is usually abundant enough fruit for all.
