Dark Burgundy Scarlet Sage

This is one of the original selections of Salvia splendens called 'Van Houttei' the color is deep burgundy and really is a great contrast to the light green foliage. The straight species is bright red and was also the species that the common red bedding plant salvia, popularized since the 1970's, was hybridized from. In resent years many new color selections have been made of both the perennial 'Van Houttei' forms, as well as the bedding plant type. The 'Van Houttei' types are shrubby and make good garden plants, the bedding type are more particular, need rich soil and lots of fertilizer. The 'Van Houttei' burgundy selection flowers in spring, summer, fall, and even in the winter in warmer climates. This perennial sage grows4’ x 4’. Good soil, moisture and some protection from frost. Sun or bright shade is best. While it is a stunning plant in the garden, in small containers the plant looks straggly which makes it harder to sell in nurseries, but once planted this salvia is a champ.
