Calliandra angustifolia

Weeping Pink and White Powderpuff

This uncommon South American evergreen large shrub or small tree, grows to 12' tall and wide. It has a wide arching habit. In frost free areas, it is an ideal specimen for year round bloom, it seems to sheet bloom, that is, it blooms heavily all at once up and down the branches, then takes a break and booms again. The powder puff like blooms are pink tipped and white toward the center on an open vase shaded plant. Exceptional, best in sun, regular water. This is the selection more common on the Hilo side of the Big Island of Hawaii. It's smaller and a little more cold sensitive than Calliandra surinamensis, which it looks similar to, which has larger flowers and blooms year round, but not in sheets. The species is listed as being psychotropic, but I have not confirmed this. This selection / species is questionable as to the ID, many Calliandras hybridize freely here in hawaii.
