Hibiscus sabdariffa

Jamaica Sorrel, Roselle

A perennial hibiscus from the old world tropics used for making tea as well as medicinal uses and fiber for rope. For tea the flower parts known as sepals are used, first dried and then adding boiling water until it turns red and then add sugar to taste. Plants like full sun, get about 5' tall. Super easy to grow, fast during the warm season, evergreen in the tropics, best if tipped to keep bushy. In cooler climates it can go somewhat dormant in the winter, but it can not handle frost. In colder climates it's just grown as an annual. Start with young plants or collected seed in the early spring.
