Schaueria flavicoma

Golden Plume

A tropical perennial from Brazil in the Justicia family, shrubby to 4' with a long lasting terminal inflorescence that look like a yellow fluffy cone with small white flowers sprinkled on it. Shiny leaves are narrow and lanceolate, frost sensitive. Full sun in the tropics or part shade elsewhere. Similar to S. calycotricha, which has wider leaves. I don't know why I didn't know this plant before I moved to Hawaii, they are very easy to grow and propagate, maybe the name was just too unusual. It always gets comments when it's blooming in the garden. Can be used for cut flowers, blooms year round here in Hawaii. Would make a good filler in mixed container plantings, even if used as an annual.
