Cinnamomum verum (C. zeylanicum)

This True Cinnamon, native to Sri Lanka, is a large evergreen tree that can reach up to 50 feet. It is a very robust form of cinnamon and is generally more difficult to propagate than Cinnamomum cassia, which is commonly used in commercial cinnamon production. The leaf petioles can be chewed and release a pronounced cinnamon flavor. New foliage emerges with a reddish tint. Highly tropical in nature, it is typically grown from seed. It is cultivated on a commercial scale in the Seychelles, Madagascar, and Tanzania, and on Borneo Cinnamomum verum is usually grown at low elevations.
