Yellow Thread Croton, Yellow String Croton
These evergreen tropical shrubs are from Malaysia, known worldwide for their very colorful waxy foliage. Popular as houseplants, but in frost free areas, they can be grown outdoors. Most often seen in Hawaii and Florida, only occasionally in Southern California in warm micro-climates. California has cool nights and warmer nights are probably the thing needed for good growth, these plants really like heat. Needs bright light and high humidity to do well, but do color up nicely in part shade if warm enough. Can grow to 6' tall or more. Best with rich soil and water. Feed to promote growth. In the Euphorbia family. Easy to grow from cuttings, but are relatively slow growers.
The colors in each selection can change under different environmental conditions and season.
This selection has leaves that are narrow and string-like. The foliage is mostly striped yellow with a fine green edge. It is relatively slow, even for a croton, heat really helps it out. It can grow to 3' tall or more. I got this plant originally from a well known plant in downtown Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii.
