Gardenia jasminoides 'Belmont’

Extremely fragrant tropical shrubs with shiny green leaves from Asia. This selection has strongly fragrant huge rose-like white flowers. They prefer warm conditions with lots of humidity, rich acid soil with good drainage. It's shrubby to 5' or more under ideal conditions. It's generally recommended to add copious amounts of organic matter, which is acidic, to the planting hole, peat-moss is most commonly sited, but any compost works well. If your native soil is very alkaline, the addition of soil sulfur and gypsum can also help. They like regular water and regular feeding, something high in nitrogen, these guys are heavy feeders, but so worth it. A lot of people grow gardenias in pots to have better control over the soil, just don't forget to water. Best in the full sun, tolerates some shade only in extremely hot areas. Will tolerate a light frost easily, but not a hard freeze. Many people overwinter their plants in containers on a covered porch. Nothing in the world like gardenias. Great in tropical climates, but they can be buggy, plant in a sunny area with good air circulation, thin out plants to encourage that.
