Gardenia volkensii

African Tree Gardenia

A 10' tall, or more, shrub that, once established, produces hundreds of large fragrant single white blooms that turn golden yellow as they age.  It has an angular structure and small dark green rounded foliage. Full sun, regular feeding. The large woody fruit resembles a ribbed potato. Seems to do better than Gardenia thunbergia here in Hilo, Hawaii. May do well in CA, I think it would, but haven't seen it there. Would probably love Florida, since it does so well here in Hawaii. Needs to be about 5' tall before it starts to old enough to bloom.
