False Roselle Hibiscus

A short lived perennial shrub to 5' with deep burgundy foliage that's deeply cut, somewhat resembling a red leaf Japanese Maple. Closely related to H. sabdarriffa (true roselle) in which the calyces are used for a drink. This species has deep red flowers can be used in salads, but the young small leaves can also to make a mild tea, or chopped for stir fry, the flavor is somewhat tart. Full sun or part, regular water, very easy to grow. Can re-seed in the garden, and also grows very fast from cuttings. Can be kept smaller with regular pruning. Plants are not hardy, but cuttings can be overwintered.
