Vanilla fragrans 'Variegata' (V. planifolia)

An orchid native to Tropical America, cultivated primarily for its seed pods, which, when carefully dried, become the commercial vanilla widely used in flavoring. The flowers require hand pollination early in the morning to ensure successful fruit set, and propagation is typically done through cuttings. This vine naturally climbs up tree trunks or walls and thrives best in a fast-draining growing medium such as bark or cinder. This particular selection is distinguished by a creamy, longitudinal striping running down each leaf. It is relatively easy to grow in tropical environments but can also adapt well to greenhouse conditions.
