Amherstia nobilis

Pride of Burma

A rare tropical tree, only suitable for truly tropical climates. Slow, but well worth it, as it is possibly one of the worlds most beautiful trees. The extravagant hanging flowers are salmon with crimson red with yellow highlights on the lip. They are produced at the end of a 24" long (60 cm) hanging inflorescence. The pinnate new foliage is reddish and also hangs limply at the tips. The tree grows to 30' upright at first, later with a spreading crown. Native to Burma. Loves water, protect from wind. These plants were started from air-layers. Our mother plant was started in 2009, and as of 2014 is about 30' tall from a 2gal. Young plants always look a little rough, but turn the corner after they start to 'catch'. Blooms almost non-stop for us, rarely makes seed here, which apparently has a very short viability window.
