Heliconia schiedeana

Lobster-claw Heliconia

One of the few Heliconia species that reliably blooms in California and other cooler regions in the country. Even if it freezes to the ground (upper 20's F.) it will grow back from the roots. It needs at least two years of frost free conditions to bloom. For best results in colder areas keep the area well drained, they can root in cold wet soil. Filtered sun with adequate water and rich soil is best. Grows to about 8' tall, forming a large clump 10' across. Red and yellow upright flower spikes start to form as clump becomes established, about 2 years, faster in the tropics. Easy to grow, protect from strong winds.
