Kigelia pinnata

Sausage Tree

A 30’ tropical tree from Africa, with large bi-pinnate foliage, large hanging racemes of dark red trumpet flowers, pollinated at night by bats in their homeland. The persistent fruit that forms resembles a large sausage hanging from a thick cord. Full sun, any soil that’s well drained. Very cool looking. Relatively slow, rare. A good examples in Quail Gardens and Balboa Park in CA, and lots of places in Hawaii.
