This is the large tropical shrub from which chocolate is made. It comes from the South American rain forest. It grows best in part shade, and is frequently grown in the shade of nurse trees. Small white flower clusters, appear on the trunks and older branches . Begins to bear at about 3- 5 years old. Mature pods will have up to 60 seed which are used to make chocolate. The thin flesh around the seeds can be eaten, there's not much meat, but it does taste somewhat sweet with a tropical flavor. Very tropical, dislikes any temperature below 50 F. and needs high humidity.
